I was having a
McCallan 18 with Zach, and asked him what he was thinking when he finalized the
deal on expanding the warehouse space by almost 30%? Apparently, the
building directly West of the current warehouse unexpectedly became available
after years of trying to acquire to space. "Our
neighborhood is going through some changes. If we wanted to expand smart,
we had to jump on the building" TSS just last year invested in a
reorganization of the main facility to maximize warehouse efficiency by
borrowing ideas from people like Amazon and TJ Maxx and implementing an entire
re-racking of the whole space. First officer, Greg, took pictures of the
event on a daily basis, check out the process below.
"We had no space
to even shelve another case of 10" plates, and adding a new item to
inventory meant we had to basically eliminate two old ones". Part of
the upgrade to the warehouse was a switch to an all-encompassing RFID system
for inventory management. " It's like setting up every case with a
little radio broadcasting what it is and where it is" was the cliff
note explanation I got when I asked what RFID is. The most important
aspect of the deal was that the walk from building one to building two is about
three yards. "This was the next best thing to putting an extension
on our current space. We had a satellite warehouse about a quarter
mile away, but it might as well have been in Boulder when it came
to efficiency". The house just
got an addition … and people are already calling dibs on the handful of new offices
we get with the extension (and the old ones that are getting vacated).
